Owning and burning candles may seem simple, but it can actually be dangerous. Even as an adult, it doesn’t hurt to brush up on safety tips when lighting a 100% premium soy candle in the home. Here are three common issues that you may experience and how to handle them.
- Burn Time
Like a good baseball glove, sometimes candles take a second to warm up and take shape. Candles made from 100% soy wax have a ‘memory’ and should be allowed to achieve a full melt pool on its very first burn. If your candle is extinguished prior to allowing a full melt pool being achieved, all subsequent melt pools will not go past the first one.
To create a full melt pool, burn the candle for a minimum of one hour for every inch of its diameter. All future burns should follow the first one’s path and melt fully to the sides of the container. And depending on the diameter of the container, those future burns should be no longer than four hours. Just follow the rule for creating a melt pool to calculate the length of time a candle can burn safely.
- Wick Length
Have you ever had a candle wick curl up on you and break while you were trying to reshape it? That’s no fun and could potentially limit the use of your favorite candle. Trim the wicks of your premium soy candles to 1/4 inch each time before burning. Long or crooked wicks cause uneven burning and dripping. See our selection of trimmers to keep your wicks an appropriate length.
- Extinguishing Technique
Extinguishing a candle in your living room is not the same as blowing out a birthday candle. There’s no need to take a giant breath and blow with all your might to make sure your wish comes true. As a result of the wax that pools around the wick you could risk splattering hot wax everywhere. Instead, hold your index finger in front of the flame and blow at it. Air will flow around your finger, extinguish the candle from both sides, and prevent hot wax from splattering.
